Press Release

OPTISYS PRODUCES WORLDS LARGEST MONOLITHIC 3D PRINTED ANTENNA In another industry first, Optisys has recently completed the development and production of the world’s largest single print all metal antenna, with the design and manufacture of a 0.75 meter long flat panel slotted antenna.

  • Optisys produces world’s largest monolithic 3d printed antenna.

  • Based on existing proprietary RF solutions, it is now ready to be deployed to sea, land, air and space environments.

Salt Lake, UTAH, [4th August 2020]: Optisys LLC has recently completed the development and production of an ultra large flat panel slotted antenna tile for use in sea, ground, aerospace and satellite applications. The nearly 1 meter long antenna was printed in metal as one continuous piece using DMLS equipment, a technology that is core to Optisys unique product offering.

“We have been developing ways we can increase the size and cost efficiency of our large array offerings,” commented Janos Opra, CEO of Optisys. “Today marks the conclusion of an incredible R&D effort to obtain this capability.”

The ultra-large tile can form the basis for a much larger array, made up of many of these building blocks and is suitable for any application already covered by Optisys technology from sea to space. The flat panel slotted antenna was chosen as a development piece because of its reliance on flatness and tight tolerances, attributes which are challenging to achieve on such a large scale using 3d metal printing.

Optisys’ successful production of this antenna, and the information gained in doing so, further extends its capability over legacy technology and competitors.

“We have been able to produce any size antenna or radar array, using tiling, for a while now,” said Michael Hollenbeck, CTO of Optisys. “However this development brings a new level of cost effectiveness and we have demonstrated our scalability to truly ground breaking sizes.”

OPTISYS BUCKS THE TREND AND INVESTS IN MARKET LEADING MANUFACTURING CAPABILITY

Optisys has placed an order with partner SLM Solutions for an SLM®500 selective laser melting machine, which will expand its production capability significantly.

  • Optisys orders SLM®500 from SLM Solutions.

  • Optisys will increase its current production capacity significantly to meet the demand for ever larger antenna arrays.

  • Will provide Optisys a market leading capability to produce large antenna tiles and further improve cost effectiveness of production items.

Salt Lake, UTAH, [16th July 2020]: Optisys LLC has completed the order of a cutting edge SLM®500 metal 3d printer from SLM Solutions to further expand its production capability of market leading antenna and radar products.

“This additional machine,” commented COO Robert Smith, “ will give us both the capability to develop and produce larger antenna tiles, which we combine together to make very large antenna arrays, or the ability to nest a larger number of small antenna products to further improve cost effectiveness of our unique solutions.”

Optisys specialises in innovative RF solutions for a range of industries from marine to space, taking advantage of 3d printing to revolutionise the design process for a vast number of market segments. Throughout the evaluation process, it became clear that the SLM®500 was an ideal choice to expand Optisys’ capabilities. The SLM®500’s enormous 500mmx280mm powder bed will allow Optisys to further increase the size and cost effectiveness of its large tiled antenna arrays, which can reach many square meters in size, and the four laser system will greatly speed up the manufacture process. These two advantages are expected to allow Optisys to increase production capacity by a significant amount and greatly reduce cost per part.

During a time period of great uncertainty for many, Optisys has been fortunate to make this acquisition due to the great amount of current and upcoming development and production contracts.

“We are proud to announce this development at this time because it has been entirely internally funded,” said CEO Janos Opra, “our business has not abated which we understand is due to the remarkable advantage our technology offers our customers. We are seeing lots of companies moving to us to further improve their system or product, because we can give them a greater advantage over their own competitors. Tough market conditions have just pushed them our way with a bit more urgency.”

Optisys plans to fully integrate the new machine by Q3 2020, however, design work has already started on products that will be produced using this machine with printed parts expected to be delivered using this platform at the beginning of Q4 2020.
